What are the baggage rules for bmibaby flights?

A Baggage Fee is charged for the carriage of checked baggage. The standard baggage weight allowance is 18kg per person per one way flight. 

Baby buggies (subject to an infant/child under 5 years of age travelling), wheelchairs, scooters and walking frames are carried free of charge.

The baggage fee varies dependent on the weight allowance purchased and may be prepaid at the current discounted internet rate of £12.99/€15.00 per 18kg standard baggage weight allowance per one way flight and £9.00/€11.00 per each additional kg when making your reservation online. If you wish to increase your baggage weight allowance at a later date you can do this via the ‘manage your bookings’ section of the website, the call centre or when you arrive at the airport. Please note a £20.00/€20.00 charge per 18kg standard weight allowance and £9.00/€11.00 per each additional kg will apply per one way flight for any weight allowance added on-line or by the call centre.  

Each passenger can take a maximum of 5 bags per one way flight that must not exceed the weight allowance purchased.  Passengers travelling together on the same booking reservation, who have individually purchased baggage allowance, can pool their baggage up to the equivalent of the total purchased weight allowance.  Once this limit is reached then standard overweight charges as detailed below will apply. Please note passengers travelling on the same booking reservation must all check-in at the same time in order to pool the baggage allowance.
Infants under the age of 2 years (on the date of departure of each flight) are entitled to a 5kg baggage allowance, this will be added to the adult responsible for the infant. For children over 2 years, the price of flights and the baggage allowance is the same as for adults.

Please note a pram/buggy will be carried free of charge providing an infant/child under 5 years of age is travelling. Should an infant be travelling the carriage of infant travel cots and car seats will be permitted at the standard charge of £10.00/€12.50 per item per one way flight when added during the booking process providing that the weight and dimensions does not exceed that of standard hold luggage.

All baggage in excess of the purchased baggage allowance will be charged at the bmibaby excess baggage rate applicable as at the date of your flight. The current rate charged at the airport is £12.00/€15.00 per kilo on UK, Eire & International flights. Please note, the maximum weight of any one item of baggage is 32kg.
Outsize items requiring additional handling include canoes, surfboards, golf clubs, skis, bicycles, musical instruments and all other bulky equipment, will be charged at £17.99/€22.00 per sector per item when booked online, and will only be carried subject to space availability on the aircraft. Bicycles will only be accepted if suitably packaged.  All outsize items will officially travel stand-by. bmibaby will not be responsible for repatriation if there is a delay. Any item not listed above is subject to the standard excess baggage rate.

What's my hand luggage allowance?

Each passenger (except infants) is permitted one standard piece of hand luggage, with maximum dimensions 55x40x20cm and a maximum weight of 10kg.

These dimensions relate to a packed bag, including the wheels/handles.  If your baggage doesn’t fit comfortably into one of our gauges at the airport, you will have to check it into the hold and there will be an additional fee to pay to do this.

What can I take as hand baggage

You are only allowed to take small quantities of liquids in your cabin luggage or on your person. These liquids must be in individual containers with a maximum capacity of 100 millilitres each. You must pack these containers in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag of not more than one litre capacity.
At the airport you must:
• present the plastic bag containing your liquid containers to the screeners at security checkpoints for examination
• take off your jacket and/or coat. They will be screened separately whilst you walk through the metal detector.
• remove laptop computers and other large electrical devices from your cabin luggage. They will be screened separately whilst you walk through the metal detector.

Liquids include:

• water and other drinks, soups, syrups
• creams, lotions and oils
• perfumes
• sprays including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants
• gels, including hair and shower gels
• contents of pressurised containers
• pastes, including toothpaste
• liquid-solid mixtures any other item of similar consistency

What does not change?

You can still:
• pack liquids in bags that you check-in - the new rules only affect cabin luggage.
• carry in your cabin luggage medicines and dietary requirements, including baby foods, for use during the trip. In this case, there are no restrictions on the quantity of liquids that you can carry.
• buy liquids, such as drinks and perfumes, in an EU airport shop located beyond.
• the point where you show your boarding pass. If they are sold in a special sealed bag, wait until you are screened before opening the bag. Here again there are no restrictions on the quantity of liquids that you can buy.
• If your journey includes a transfer to another flight at an EU airport, you can still buy liquids either in an EU airport located beyond the point where you show your boarding pass or on board an aircraft operated by an EU airline. The liquids will be sold in a special sealed bag. Wait until you are screened at the [last] airport of transfer in the EU before opening the bag

What items are prohibited on bmibaby flights?

Under no circumstances will bmibaby carry firearms either on board or as checked baggage.
In addition to the list of dangerous items listed below that are prohibited for carriage in baggage, the following items are also prohibited from being carried onboard in cabin baggage: Toy or replica guns (plastic or metal), catapults, household cutlery, knives with blades of any length, paper knives, razor blades, tradesmens tools, darts, scissors, tweezers, hypodermic syringes (unless a genuine medical need can be proven), knitting needles, sporting bats, billiard, snooker or pool cues. bmibaby does not permit ski boots to be carried onboard or as hand baggage, however ski boots are accepted as checked in baggage – see sporting equipment for more information.

What can't I take in my cabin or checked baggage?

For safety reasons, dangerous goods as defined in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, such as those listed below, must not be carried in your cabin or checked baggage.

    Explosives - ammunitions, fireworks, flares etc 

    Compressed gases (flammable, non-flammable, deeply refrigerated and poisonous) such as camping gas and aerosols

     Flammable liquids such as lighter fuels, paints and thinner

     Flammable solids such as matches and articles which are easily ignited such as firelighters

     Substances liable to spontaneous combustion

     Substances which on contact with water emit flammable gases

     Oxidising substances (such as bleaching powder and peroxides)

     Poisonous (toxic) and infectious substances such insecticides, weed killers and live virus materials

     Radioactive materials

     Corrosives such as mercury (which may be contained in thermometers) acids, alkalis and wet cell batteries

     Disabling devices such as mace, pepper spray, etc containing an irritant or incapacitating substance are prohibited on the person, in checked and carry-on baggage

     Briefcases and security type attaché cases with installed alarm devices; or incorporative lithium batteries and/or pyrotechnic material

     Electro shock weapons (e.g.Tasers) containing dangerous goods such as explosives, compressed gases, lithium batteries, etc. 

     Personal medical oxygen devices that utilise liquid oxygen

     Magnetised materials and miscellaneous dangerous goods as listed in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations

Please note: One small packet of safety matches or a cigarette lighter that does not contain unabsorbed liquid fuel, other than liquified gas, may be carried about your person. Strike anywhere matches and "Blue flame" or "Cigar" lighters are forbidden on all air transport.

Medicines and toiletries

You may take non-radioactive medicinal items or toiletries (including aerosols) like hairsprays, perfumes, colognes and medicines containing alcohol, in limited quantities in your checked and hand baggage:

     Single articles must not weigh more than 0.5kg or 0.5 litres (1.1lb or 1pt).

     Combined articles must not weight more than 2.0 kg or 2.0 litres (4.4lbs or 2.0qt)

     Release valves on aerosols must be protected by a cap or other suitable means to prevent inadvertent release of the contents

Please note that some of the quantities stated above are further restricted by current security restrictions, if these items are carried as hand baggage.

Miscellaneous articles

You must be aware that items such as the following need to be approved by us prior to carriage.

     Firearms and ammunition

    Carbon dioxide, solid (dry ice)

     Battery-powered wheelchairs (with non-spillable or lithium batteries) or other similar mobility aids for use by passengers whose mobility is restricted by either a disability, their health or age, or a temporary mobility problem.

     Heat producing articles

     Mercury barometer or thermometer

     Lithium-ion batteries with a Watt-hour rating exceeding 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh for portable electronic devices

     Life jacket with non flammable gas cylinder(s) fitted

     Oxygen or air, gaseous, small cylinder(s) required for medical use not exceeding 5Kg gross weight

      Portable medical electronic devices (Automated External Defibrillators (AED), Nebulizer, Oxygen Concentrators (POC), Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machines (CPAP) containing lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries

      Avalanche rescue backpack

      Chemical agent monitoring equipment

      Insulated packages containing refrigerated liquid nitrogen

      Camping stoves and fuel containers that have contained a flammable liquid fuel.

What happens if my bags are delayed or lost?

In the unlikely event that your baggage is lost, damaged or stolen whilst in the care of bmibaby or one of our ground handling agents, this should be immediately reported to the ground handling staff at the arrival airport.
bmibaby makes every effort to locate lost bags using a world-wide computer network designed exclusively for this purpose. Most delayed bags are located and returned within 48 hours. To track the progress on the location or delivery of baggage please call 0905 8282828 (Calls cost 65p per minute from a BT Landline. Calls from mobiles and other networks will be considerably more) and choose option four. The baggage helpline can only view files from Nottingham East Midlands, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports. All other bmibaby stations track baggage via the local handling agent who will have access to a local telephone number to call.

Which bag do I pack valuables and/or medication in?

Passengers are strongly advised to carry personal belongings, valuables and medication on their person or in their hand baggage (subject to permitted baggage allowance).

Can I check in baggage over my allowance?

All baggage in excess of the purchased checked baggage weight allowance will be charged for at a standard rate at £12.00/€15.00 per kilo on UK, Eire and International flights. Please note, the maximum weight of any one item of baggage is 32kg.

Can I check in sporting equipment?

Leisure equipment which requires additional handling including (non exhaustive list) such as bicycles, fencing equipment, fishing equipment, golf clubs, hockey equipment, musical equipment, paintball equipment, scuba equipment, skis and snowboards (Passengers who have paid the relevant sporting goods fees in respect of Skis or Snow boards will be allowed to check in one set of ski/board boots without further baggage charge), and toolboxes will be charged at £17.99 (€22) per sector per item on the website and £23.00 (€28) per sector per item when booked through the bmibaby call centre or airport. Larger items including Canoes, Hang gliders, Surfboards and Wind Surfboards will be charged at £24.99 (€31) per sector per item on the website and £30.00 (€38) per sector per item when booked through the bmibaby call centre or airport. These items will be carried subject to space availability on the aircraft and sports equipment bags must only contain the items for practising the sport. Ski boots that are checked-in without skis are to be included in the baggage weight allowance purchased during the booking process and are subject to the standard weight allowance fees when booked online.

PLEASE NOTE: bicycles will only be accepted if suitably packaged. The maximum weight of any of these items is 18kgs. Can I take my musical instrument?

Passengers can purchase an additional seat for musical instruments such as cellos. These can be accepted provided that they can be securely fastened in the aircraft seat. Additional seats must be purchased via the bmibaby call centre on 0905 8282828 (Calls cost 65p per minute from a BT Landline. Calls from mobiles and other networks will be considerably more) to obtain the standard published fare available for the requested dates of travel (subject to availability). All musical items will be charged at £17.99 (€22) per sector per item on the website and £23.00 (€28) per sector per item when booked through the bmibaby call centre or airport.

One (1) small musical instrument, which must fit in the overhead locker, will be allowed as a second item of cabin baggage (no items other than the instrument and its accessories may be carried in the case) this is strictly subject to the Captain's discretion. My bags are damaged following my bmibaby flight

In the unlikely event that your baggage was damaged whilst in the care of bmibaby or by one of our ground handling agents, this should be immediately reported to the ground handling staff at the arrival airport.

Can I carry my licensed firearm?

bmibaby do not accept the carriage of any type of firearm.
