Bordeaux,

Best place to get out of town:
Parc Bordelais
If you want greenery, and fast, head to the Parc Bordelais, in the Cauderan district of the city. Only 10 minutes from downtown, this 28 hectare park has a boating lake, a river, a little train, children’s rides, even a Punch and Judy show.

Best place for outdoor eating:
Chez Hortense
Head out to Cap Ferret, the chic beach resort on the Atlantic coast, and get a table at Chez Hortense. This beachside restaurant looks out onto Arcachon Bay, where you can watch oyster boats and pleasure boats crawling up and down, and over to the 100-metre high sand dune, the Dune de Pyla, on the far side of the bay. House specialities are mussels and chips, washed down with local dry white wine from Entre deux Mers.

Best place to get moving:
Les Quais de Bordeaux
If you want to skate/jog/rollerblade, or just generally get moving, head to the newly renovated quays along the river Garonne in downtown Bordeaux, from the Bassin a Flots harbour, down to the Quai du Paludate by the railway station. In total, there are over 4.5km of gardens, paved walkways, skate parks, basketball courts, wall tennis, even a beach volley ball court. If you get tired, the trams also follow the quays from beginning to end.

Best architectural feature:
Mascarons
While you’re walking around the city, don’t forget to look upwards... on most of the traditional buildings, you’ll see a funny collection of gargoyles looking back down at you. These stone carved faces are called mascarons, and were very popular in the 18th century, usually revealing something about the person who owned the house; so expect to see a lot of faces with grapes instead of hair! And for a great souvenir, you can buy a chocolate version of these pieces of Bordeaux heritage, also called Bordeaux mascarons.
