All about...
Cologne,
There's something distinctly “un-German” about Cologne – some people put it down to the city's Mediterranean vibe, others say it's down to the friendliness of the “Kölners” (the locals). Whatever the reason, Cologne is a city that will give you a warm welcome. Cologne has a large student population which guarantees a full and varied night life, with a huge selection of clubs, pubs and bars. Outside, the architecture is varied: the cathedral is a wonderful example of medieval gothic, while some districts are full of gorgeous art nouveau-style buildings, and others 1950s and 60s concrete anonymity. Everything is packed into a small, compact area, ensuring that you’re never far away from where it's all happening.

Best landmark:
The Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral)
This huge gothic cathedral in the middle of the city took more than 600 years to build, although building work actually ceased for 400 of those. Climb the 509 steps to the top of the north tower and enjoy a spectacular view across the city.
Where: Domkloster 4, Köln 50667

Best historical walk:
“Altstadt” (old town)
While much of Cologne was bombed flat in the second world war, the city's “Altstadt” (old town) is still intact. Admire the narrow buildings and cobbled streets, and then make your way to Rheinzeit by the river, for some traditional Cologne specialities, washed down with a cold glass of Kölsch.
