Best attraction:
Chatsworth, Derbyshire
One of Britain’s most acclaimed stately homes, Chatsworth has been used as the backdrop to a number of filming projects, most notably The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley. It was also used for Darcy’s home in the film of Pride & Prejudice which also starred Ms Knightley, and more recently as the location for Wolfman, a new film starring Antony Hopkins. Immerse yourself in the period beauty of the place and take a walk around the beautifully landscaped gardens with its waterworks, maze and sculptures, followed by a spot of afternoon tea in the Cavendish rooms.

Best gallery:
New Art Exchange, Nottingham
At Nottingham’s New Art Exchange, a cool black-brick square block exterior lends itself to a contemporary gallery space for African, Afro-Caribbean and south Asian arts. It’s the only venue of its kind outside London, providing valuable exposure to non-white artists and performers. Off the beaten-track, just outside the city centre, yet easily accessible with a tram stop across the road, it blends in with the multi-cultural community that surrounds it. Local residents and commuters to the city meet here for coffee or a leisurely lunch, with homemade hot and cold food served throughout the day. All exhibitions are free to enter.
